In 2011 and 2013, Jo-Anne accompanied the Mary A. Tidlund Charitable Foundation on medical missions in Tanzania and Senegal. Among the Foundation’s many efforts, they offered medical services to women and children in remote areas of these countries. This short film offers a glimpse into the work of the Foundation and the lives of some of the people we met.

“This is the story no one wants. This is the story I’ve sat with time and time again since 2011, wondering where it could go and who would dare look.” So begins Jo-Anne McArthur’s narration as she recounts this day of filming at a remote slaughterhouse in Tanzania.

Since its beginning 58 years ago, the annual Rattlesnake Roundup in Sweetwater Texas has caught and killed over 250,000 wild rattlesnakes. The festival’s activities include live handling demonstrations, beheadings, participatory skinning demonstrations, fried snake eating contests, and a Miss Snake Charmer beauty pageant. Proponents of the roundup defend the tradition in stating the primary purpose of roundups is to promote awareness and safety of wild rattlesnakes.
In collaboration with Advocates for Snake Preservation, I went to the Sweetwater Roundup in 2015 to document capture this story, and try to understand and expose the fallacies that lead us to the mass killing of these maligned creatures.
